EXMOUTH MARKET HANDS TO FEET: DRAWING TO SOCIALLY UN-DISTANCE STRANGERS

Anna Liu: “I want drawings to be simple, straightforward, spontaneous, swift - a social act. Can it be an everyday activity? Can it break down social barriers? More than an action or a resultant artefact, can drawing be a mindset, that of social connectivity, openness, and trust”.

In this workshop, you will pair up with another person and be given a neon coloured chalk. Walking up and down the length of Exmouth Market, we will observe how people are socialising in the street. The task will be to approach strangers and map how they are interacting through drawing around their feet in your coloured chalk, continuing until the chalk is used up. Through this, we will have a snapshot of an evening’s social interaction in the form of a temporary drawing on the pavement. 

Bio:
Anna is a qualified architect with experience in architecture, sculpture, and landscape, working in the UK, China, Japan, the US where she grew up, and Taiwan where she was born. She set up Tonkin Liu with Mike Tonkin in 2002. Together they taught at the AA School of Architecture, exploring studies of patterns in nature and in human nature, an area that she continues to experiment with in painting and in architecture.
