ENGLISH NATURE THROUGH MUSIC

with Duo Fabulae: Lorena Cantó Woltèche and Yvain Calvo
Sunday, 10 November
2.30-5pm
Location: In the Church Hall (under the EtP Studio)

For this interdisciplinary workshop we will draw from musicians Duo Fabluae as they perform a concert of selected pieces looking at English nature through music, including Dowland, Bridge and Britten. Duo Fabulae are made up of viola player Lorena Cantó Woltèche and pianist Yvain Calvo. The music and their movements will inspire our visual translations. The concert will also feature a screening of filmmaker Radu Roja’s short film - a collaboration with Duo Fabulae in which they performed the 1st movement of Frank Bridge’s Cello Sonata.

Composers have long been inspired by the beauty of nature, and this can be seen in the works of many great composers throughout history. The music of Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten shows an intense love for nature, evident in their compositions’ stylistic and melodic structures. During the First World War, this love for nature took on a new significance as the natural world became a symbol of hope and restoration in a time of great destruction. In response, many composers used their music as a means of reflecting on the destruction wrought by the war and exploring themes of loss, grief, and the struggle for hope and renewal.

Bio:
Our name is Duo Fabulae and we are a viola (Lorena Cantó Woltèche) and piano (Yvain Calvo) ensemble based in London. We started out as a result of the pandemic, with the aim of launching an online music series at the Sands Films Studio in London. From the very start, our concerts have focused on exploring the narrative side of classical music and creating programmes that speak to us about songs and stories from the past, present and future.

Lorena led Music & Drawing courses at EtP in Spring and Summer 2024.
