With Molly Martin
TALK: Friday, 13 October, 2023
Location: Studio, 26 Exmouth Market, EC1 4QE

This talk is about the power and importance of the humble sketchbook, looking at reportage, journaling and drawing.

Sketchbooks are a window into the artist's mind and soul. They are useful drawing tools as well as time capsules and journals for thoughts, plans, ideas and designs. Within them we find a particular style of drawing - often different to the finished works we see on gallery walls. They are scrappy, instinctive and unsure, which can make them all the more fascinating.

Join Molly as she investigates the importance and beauty of the artist's sketchbook through looking at key examples. Taking you on a journey, she will look at the reportage sketchbook pages of Cezanne and Delacoix; the diagrammatic notes of Hilma Af Klint; and the delicate studies of Lucian Freud. Molly will also discuss her own sketchbooks, how her use of them has changed, and how they have remained as important guides throughout her career.

Molly Martin is an artist based in London. She is currently studying her Masters at City & Guilds Art School and teaches the ‘Seeing with Sketchbooks’ workshops at Eye to Pencil. She works constantly in sketchbooks in which she draws from the everyday as well as from Gallery paintings. Her current work looks at the intricate world of the human condition within close relationships and everyday interactions. Her acclaimed book ‘The Art of Repair’ was published in 2021.
